Skuodas region is the old Curonian land, famous for its still existent Sacred Places of Balts’, altar stones, burial mounds and mounds. The Apuolė mound is known as the oldest settlement in Lithuania because the mound was inhabited in the first year after Christ. The area in the north-western part of Lithuania, in Samogitia, is bordered by the state of Latvia and the district municipality center (Skuodas city) is at the Lithuanian-Latvian border. The region of Skuodas will welcome you with calmness, beautiful nature, and history.
1. Tundra of Šaukliai
“Tundra of Šauklai” is 3 km southwest from Mosėdis town (1 km south-east of Šaukliai village), the boulders' field - junipers' field which does not lack the attention of tourists. It is a reserve where the exclusive landscape with growing junipers and boulders that were brought by the glacier is protected. The educational, 300-meter long, wooden trail has been founded. There is a rest area, water pond.
2. Mosėdis (distance 6.5 km from tundra of Šaukliai)
Near Mosėdis town stretches a pond along with flowing Bartuva river. Also, Salantai regional park is founded here. The area is famous for its unique stone collections, which can be seen at the republican Stone Museum of Vaclovas Intas. It is said that Mosėdis and stones have become an integral part of each other. There is a 3.5 km educational walkway through the town. Traveling by this walkway you won't get lost - the right way is marked with arrows. The trail, which begins at the Stone Museum, introduces with the town sights and ends at the Mosėdis mound.
3.Skuodas (distance 14.5 km from Mosėdis city)
You will be welcomed by the "Wellness trail" which is beautiful because of a small bridges, plants and sculptures. The Skuodas pond is located next to the park, and several small forests are on the east bank. It is a great place to stop, take a break and admire the view, calmness. Going to the other side of Bartuva river at Gedimino str. and from Vytauto str. turning right you will reach Skuodas district municipality building (Vytauto str. 13). The monument of Jonas Chodkevičius, founder of Skuodas, stands next to it.
4. The mound of Apuolė (distance 12.4 km from Skuodas town)
From Skuodas moving to east direction, you will go towards Apuolė. In this village there is the mound of Apuolė, famous for the battle between Curonians and Vikings near the mound. In addition, it is famous for castle which stood once on the mound. This place was the earliest mentioned place of Lithuania in written sources. Climb to this mound and feel the spirit of past times.
5. The park of I. Navidanskas (distance 17.4 km from the mound of Apuolė)
Here Izidorius Navidanskas founded the park. It is one of the first botanical gardens in Lithuania. The cozy Samogitian botanical park attracts holidaymakers with a variety of plants, tree alleys, seven ponds and resorts. During the summer you can refresh oneself with cold water in the ponds or you can catch some fish. This is a true relaxation in the oasis of nature.
6. Ylakiai (distance 4 km from the park of I. Navidanskas)
The old street network, square and buildings are still extant in Ylakiai. In the center of the town is the cultural heritage the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the cemetery - the neogothic red brick chapel. Another sanctuary – the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ylakiai.
7. The stone of Barstyčiai (Puokė) (distance 13.5 km from Ylakiai town)
The biggest stone in Lithuania. 13-14 thousand years ago, boulder brought by the glacier is bigger than the boulder "Puntukas" of Anykščiai town (this one takes the second place). The stone lies at Puokė village, about 3 km. away from the town of Barstyčiai, that's why it is called by the name of Puokė and Barstyčiai. The stone is surrounded by an array of trees on one side and also a resting place with benches, trails and gazebo. Enjoy the impressions of your journey next to this stone.
