Presentation of the latest book "Homeland Lithuania. Life in the Spaces of Time and History" by Kęstutis Subačius, Honorary Citizen of Skuodas

Kęstutis Subačius – civil engineer, businessman, historian, local historian, political, cultural and educational figure. Born in 1937 in Lazdijai. In 1946–1950 he studied at the Užlekniai (Šilutė district) primary school, in 1951–1954 – at the Juknaičiai (Šilutė district) seven-year school. In 1954–1958 he studied at Kaunas Polytechnic, in 1962–1965 – at the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (now Kaunas University of Technology). In 1958–1959 he was a foreman and work executor of the Skuodas Construction and Repair Organization, in 1962–1963 – a foreman of the 1st SRV of Kaunas City, in 1963–1965 – Senior Engineer of the Skuodas Construction and Repair Organization, 1965–1976 – Deputy Chairman of the Skuodas District Municipal Council, Chairman of the Planning Commission. While working at the Skuodas Municipal Council, he initiated the creation of a city park with a pond. Since 1976, he has lived in Marijampolė. Here he was the Chairman of the Municipal Council, initiated the renovation of the old town, the arrangement of the Poezija and Pašešupis parks, the city recreation area with a pond and green spaces, the construction of a hospital, public library, Municipality, cultural center, reconstruction of streets, restoration of the drama theater, and reconstruction of the Lutheran church. In 1990–1991, he founded the Christian Culture Center in Marijampolė and was its manager.

Since 1992, he has been engaged in construction, trade and social activities. He has been a member of various organizations: the Sūduva Regional Ethnic Culture Guardian Council; the theater society “Gabija”, of which he is the founder. In addition to the title of honorary member, he is the founder, member, vice-chairman of the Sūduva Regional Science, History and Culture Society, and since 2012 an honorary member; a member of the Sūduva Regional History Lovers Club; a member of the program council of the historical heritage yearbook “Terra Jatwezenorum” (since 2010) and deputy editor (since 2017). In 2011–2016, he served as the public advisor for culture to the mayor of Marijampolė municipality. He is the author of the motto and construction of the Sūduva Regional Monument “For the Nation and Language”.

He has published a number of articles on the history of the region. He has written and published books about Sūduva. He has given presentations at conferences held in Lithuania and abroad on topical issues of historical memory, ethnic culture, regional history and culture. He has published many articles on this topic in our country's and foreign press.

Subačis was awarded the honorary title of a Meritorious Worker of Culture and Education (1987), the Order of the Badge of Honor (1986), the Honorary Badge of the Governor of Marijampolė County (2009), the Order of St. George, Patron of Marijampolė (2012). And for the book "Skuodas: Region and City", he was awarded the Simonas Daukantas Prize (2021) and the title of Honorary Citizen of Skuodas (2024).
