Bronius Jonušas Museum – an introduction to the March King
While traveling in the footsteps of Bronius Jonušas' life, you stopped by the composer's museum located in the premises of the Ylakiai Cultural Center. The memory of the musician who came from this region has been preserved here since 2004. This stop invites you to continue the acquaintance that began at his family home and memorial signs by getting to know the creator's life and musical legacy.
Bronius Jonušas, who hails from Pašilė, has made his way to orchestral and choral stages in Lithuania, and later to Lithuanian communities across the Atlantic. He has conducted, taught others, and composed music that has helped maintain a connection to Lithuania even while living far from it. Although he is best known for his marches and has earned the title of the King of Lithuanian Marches, his work also includes waltzes, choral songs, and solo songs.
The memory of the composer was helped by people from the region who were interested in his life. Teacher and local historian Emilija Miltenienė collected memories, photographs and press publications about Broniai Jonušas. The material she collected is stored in the Ylakiai Museum and the R. Granauskas Public Library of the Skuodas District Municipality. Virginija Žitkuvienė, then an employee of the Ylakiai Cultural Center, also devoted much attention to researching the composer's life and work. The knowledge they accumulated helps us get to know Broniai Jonušas better - through the events of his life, people's stories and his connection with his native land.
It is worth pausing at this stop and thinking about how much can begin with music in the family home. The story of Bronius Jonušas, which has spanned different countries and continents, returns here to his homeland – to the people who preserve it and pass it on to others.
