Ylakaičiai Chapel

Ylakaičiai Chapel – in memory of Bronius Jonušas' childhood

On your way from Pašilė to Ylakaių, stop by the Ylakaių chapel. A small structure located in the old village cemetery connects the past of this place and the memory of fellow countryman Bronius Jonušas. Here, the composer is remembered through his childhood and connection with his native land.

The chapel was built in 1999, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Bronius Jonušas' birth, by folk artist Kazimieras Krapauskas from Vaičaičiai. The commemorative plaque above the door testifies that it was dedicated to the composer's childhood by his wife Emilija Jonušienė and the author of the chapel himself. This dedication invites us to think about places that remain important to a person even when life stretches far from home.

The history of the place goes back much further. The old Ylakaičiai cemetery is also called the Plague Chapels - victims of epidemics were buried there. Previously, a smaller chapel stood here, where people would gather to sing May Day services. The current chapel has continued the tradition of prayer and remembrance at this place.

Look around: a tower with an ornate iron cross rises above the chapel, an altar is installed inside, and a tall wooden cross stands next to it. It is a modest stop, inviting you to slow down for a moment and remember the people whose lives are protected by the places of this land.
